Then Again...

You could of course say that the reason my book hasn't been published in English is cos it's rubbish. It's a possibility. Or it could be the economy. Or maybe my agent was rubbish. Who knows? I certainly don't. But look at the lovely packaging!

I can't believe your book was rubbish, but your agent might have been ...

Well that's the problem, it wasn't rubbish. But it wasn't brilliant either. Or it didn't manage to find the right person to think it was brilliant. There was one editor who loved it to bits and really wanted to publish it, but she'd moved into the wrong genre, so all she could do was champion it with others, and sadly that went nowhere.

I just found this, which was the feedback from the commissioning editor of my favourite UK publisher, and was quite typical of the not-quite-enthusiastic-enough response it kept getting:

Argh, hang on. My Firefox keeps going weird, or maybe it's Blogger, but whatever it is it's not lettting me copy and paste. Will try logging out/in, etc...

Hmm, must be Firefox I think. Anyway, here it is:

"[Squirrel] writes brilliantly and the novel was peppered with great moments, not least that mesmerising first scene. But somehow for me the book never quite came together. ... Sorry that I don't have any more detailed feedback but on the basis that I was not 100% swept away by this and since we have so little space on our 09/10 list, we must pass.

Hope you find someone to champion this book and [Squirrel]'s writing."
